Introduction

  • Foundation stone of NISHTAR was laid on April 28, 1951 by Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar.
  • The construction of the Nishtar hospital block started in 1953.
  • The establishment of Obs & Gynae department in Nishtar Hospital took place in 1954.
  • The journey started with 80 beds.
  • Currently, three units are operational i.e Ward No.16, 17, and 18; with 48 beds capacity in each unit.
  • Working OPD (8am to 2 pm)

Department Mission Statement:
Dedicated, Ethical, patient centered care, excellence in medical education and innovation through technology. Train future specialists with integrity, advanced research and state of art solutions to improve Women’s health and reproductive care

Goals

  1. Provide high-quality, evidence-based obstetric and gynecologic care to the population served by Nishtar Hospital, especially underserved and rural communities.
  2. Reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.
  3. Reduce fetal/neonatal morbidity and mortality.
  4. Promote safe deliveries (reduce complications such as postpartum hemorrhage, obstructed labour etc.).
  5. Improve access to and quality of prenatal, antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and reproductive health services.
  6. Optimize rates of caesarean section — avoid unnecessary C-sections, manage high-order/repeat C-sections safely.
  7. Ensure patient-centred care with dignity, privacy, and cultural sensitivity.
  8. Integrate teaching, training, and research functions: train residents, postgraduate doctors, medical students; contribute to knowledge via research.
  9. Promote family planning and reproductive health counselling to support women’s health and appropriate birth spacing.
  10. Ensure availability of emergency obstetric services 24/7.
  11. Implement quality assurance and monitoring systems for maternal health indicators.
  12. Strengthen referral systems and coordination with peripheral health facilities.

Objectives

  • Increase the proportion of pregnant women who have early and adequate antenatal care (first visit in first trimester, minimum recommended number of visits).
  • Decrease the rates of postpartum hemorrhage and obstetric complications via early detection and management.
  • Limit high-order caesarean sections by reviewing indications for first C-section and promoting vaginal birth after caesarean when safe. (Related: a study at Nishtar found morbidity increases with high order C-sections. Improve detection and management of risk factors for maternal mortality (e.g. uterine atony was found to be a major factor in postpartum hemorrhage at Nishtar.
  • Improve neonatal outcomes (low birth weight, preterm births, Apgar scores etc.).
  • Expand and strengthen family planning services, including counselling and access to contraceptives.
  • Ensure equitable access for poor and remote patients, possibly by subsidized care or free services.
  • Improve surgical outcomes in gynecologic surgeries, reduce complications and infections.
  • Enhance staff capacity in terms of knowledge, skills, especially for high risk obstetric & neonatal care.
  • Maintain and upgrade equipment, infrastructure (lab, operation theatres, neonatal care, imaging).
  • Develop and maintain audit / mortality review / lessons learned process.
  • Conduct regular research and publications to address local priorities.
