Introduction to ORIC

The Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC) is a central office for the research, and also aligns the expertise of the university faculty with the resource opportunities locally and globally. ORIC caters the needs of the community in general & patients specifically. It also coordinates and facilitates to harness of innovative ideas in medical field leading to commercialization for better patient care and preventive strategies. The resource allocation in research has a great impact on fostering innovations which leads to promoting commercialization.

The faculty and medical students are now ready for hunting national and international grants on a competitive basis. They have also developed a sense for integrating human biology with artificial intelligence, for efficient and accurate diagnosis, and treatment of the diseases. Thus knowledge and technology development, the research grants, support of postgraduate studies, innovation in the equipment development and use, sponsoring students and strengthening research communication and coordination forms the core areas of the ORIC.

Research operations

The Research Office supports the externally and internally sponsored projects of the institution by providing pre- and post-award support to PIs and ensuring compliance with Temple and sponsor regulations.

MANAGER RESEARCH 

The Manager Research shall work in close liaison with the Board of Advance Studies and Research and CPSP Regional Centre.

  • Provides overall vision to the institutional research portfolio.
  • Develop programs and activities that will increase funding for research from all public and private sources
  • Establish and maintain excellent relationships with donors and stakeholders
  • Ensure that each research to be conducted at NMU, Multan is registered with ORIC.
  • Develop a procedure of communication of research opportunities to faculty and students of NMU, Multan and develop pre- and post-award administrative procedures for sponsored projects.
  • Support the faculty with grant proposal submissions in conjunction with Sponsored or non sponsored research Projects, Administration budget development; award documentation; administrative portions of proposals; internal approvals; monitor issues around effort, cost share, and space needs.
  • Support faculty regarding contracts, progress reports, and other sponsor-related grant actions.
  • Coordinate internal and external reporting needs, including maintenance of HEI’s database.
  • Set goals and responsibilities within the research office and to monitor procedural efficiencies.
  • Develop and maintain research cores and infrastructure within the institute including web pages, internal grant review procedures, and statistical support.
  • Oversee all aspects of the operation and development of the ORIC including research administration.

Innovation & Commercialization:

  • Manager Innovation & Commercialization (full time) Promote the development of public-private partnerships in support of university research, link the university’s research community with the needs and priorities of the corporate sector, develop opportunities for applied research and explore opportunities for technology transfer and the commercialization of university research.
  • Promote the development of public-private partnerships and collaborations
  • Support the university research, and link the university’s faculty and students with the needs and priorities of the commercial organizations, keeping in view the betterment of the health of the community
  • Develop opportunities for applied research and explore opportunities for technology transfer and the commercialization of university research.
  • Review and analyze all new invention disclosures
  • Identify and establish collaborations and/or licensing agreements associated with the Institute’s intellectual property.
  • Identify potential synergies for University with non-profit research Institutes and academic licensing offices
  • Enhance culture of IP capture, including an ongoing evaluation of Institute research for IP potential.
  • Conduct collaborative research agreement review for PIs conducting research under a contract with outside institutions
  • Oversee any litigation that may arise related to Institute IP Manage any infringement matters that may arise related to Institute IP
  • Monetize royalty streams from licenses
  • Oversee IP webpage, in conjunction with the web committee
  • Work with Development Office to promote Institute IP success stories. Utilize success stories to leverage commercialization efforts.

ORIC serves to:

  • Promoting and enhancing cross cutting and multidisciplinary research initiatives.
  • Increasing and diversifying external research funding.
  • Improving integration of research and education at all levels of the university.
  • Improving translation of research into public benefit.
  • Strengthening university-industry relationships.
  • Promoting entrepreneurship, technology-transfer and commercialization activities that energize and support the local and national economy.
  • Facilitating seminars / scholarly discussions.

Future Plans

  • To improve Human Resource Development Program and explore funding for establishment of Research at NMU in its various Departments
  • To strengthen international linkages particularly with International universities based on joint research proposals for international funding
  • To hold regular scientific seminars, colloquia, symposium etc at NMU to promote the culture of interaction and sharing of scientific knowledge with researchers around the world
  • To prepare the University Strategic Business Plan for the next 5 years
  • To prepare the research Policy for the University
  • To explore possibilities of projects based on public-private partnership

Funding Sources

Higher Education Commission

The Research Grants Program provides financial support for research in all disciplines of biomedical sciences. Duration of a research grant is two to three years. The researcher is entitled to scientific apparatus/equipment, laboratory supplies and consumables, utilities, special literature, online literature and other items that may be needed for the research project; honoraria for the principal investigator (and co principal investigator, if justified), salaries of research associate(s) and supporting staff travel within the country for project-related activities.
