1.Introduction:
The Department of Thoracic Surgery, Nishtar Hospital Multan, was established in 2002 by Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Hussain Khan with the primary objective of providing specialized surgical care to patients suffering from diseases of the esophagus, stomach, trachea, lungs, pleura, mediastinum, diaphragm and chest wall. Its establishment marked a significant milestone in the development of advanced thoracic surgical services not only in South Punjab but also serve the community of lower Sindh, KPK and Balochistan addressing a critical gap in specialized patient care within the region.

Faculty and Facilities:
The department is staffed by a highly qualified and dedicated team consisting of consultants, postgraduate trainees, and trained nursing staff. The faculty is actively involved in clinical services, academic teaching, and research activities, maintaining a strong commitment to excellence and innovation.
The department functions within a well-equipped surgical complex that includes:
Modern operating theaters with advanced thoracic surgical instruments and anesthesia support.
A high-dependency recovery area and access to a fully functional intensive care unit (ICU) for comprehensive perioperative management.
Collaboration with allied departments such as Pulmonology, Gastroentrology, Paediatrics, Oncology, Radiology, and Anesthesiology ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
Regular academic meetings, case discussions, morbidity and mortality reviews, and skill enhancement workshops are conducted to promote continuous professional development and maintain high standards of surgical education.
Clinical Services:
Since its inception, the department has evolved into a center of excellence offering both elective and emergency thoracic surgical services. It manages a wide spectrum of thoracic diseases including pulmonary resections, pleural diseases especially empyema thoracis, mediastinal masses, upper GI surgeries, colonic interposition, tracheal resection and reconstruction, diaphragmatic surgeries, chest wall reconstruction, chest wall deformity and chest trauma.
The department has also embraced minimally invasive techniques, particularly Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS), significantly improving surgical precision, reducing postoperative complications, and enhancing recovery outcomes for patients
Academic and Training Activities:
The Department of Thoracic Surgery Nishtar Hospital is the first accredited training center of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) for postgraduate specialization in thoracic surgery under the administrative control of Specialized Health Care and Medical Education Department Punjab. It has successfully produced multiple FCPS-qualified consultants, many of whom are now serving in prominent institutions across Pakistan and abroad.
The department places a strong emphasis on academic excellence through structured teaching programs, journal clubs, research activities, and hands-on surgical training, fostering the development of the next generation of thoracic surgeons.
Research and Innovation:
In alignment with the university’s academic mission, the department encourages research in clinical and experimental thoracic surgery, focusing on improving patient outcomes and introducing innovative techniques. Ongoing projects explore advancements in minimally invasive and endoscopic approaches to thoracic diseases.
Future Vision:
The Department of Thoracic Surgery continues to advance toward the integration of cutting-edge technologies in surgical care. Plans are underway to establish a robotic thoracic surgery program, which will place the department among the most advanced thoracic centers in Pakistan.
The department aims to further enhance its infrastructure, training capacity, and research collaborations, maintaining its leadership role in thoracic surgical education, innovation, and patient care in South Punjab and beyond.
