INTRODUCTION OF DEPARTMENT

The Department of Radiotherapy & Oncology at Nishtar Medical University Hospital, Multan, provides cancer care through radiotherapy and chemotherapy services for patients from Multan and surrounding areas. We aim to deliver treatment in a safe and organized manner, with careful planning and respectful communication. Our team supports patients through assessment, treatment planning, therapy delivery and follow‑up, while coordinating with other departments whenever needed.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

  • To provide safe, accurate, and timely radiotherapy for cancer patients, with patient comfort and safety as priorities.
  • To maintain a clear radiotherapy workflow: assessment → immobilization → CT simulation → contouring → treatment planning (TPS) → plan verification/QA → treatment delivery → follow‑up.
  • To deliver radiotherapy using available technology, including LINAC-based external beam radiotherapy, Cobalt-60 radiotherapy, 2D planning (Acuity) and 3D-CRT according to standard protocols.
  • To ensure routine safety checks and quality assurance to support correct dose delivery and minimize treatment errors.
  • To provide chemotherapy services with standard regimens, monitoring and supportive care.
  • To improve coordination between OPD, ward, chemotherapy, simulation, planning and treatment areas to reduce delays and improve patient flow.
  • To counsel patients and families regarding treatment steps and side effects and to manage toxicity early.
  • To improve quality through clinical audit, research and regular academic activities (including Journal Club).

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Undergraduate (MBBS): 

The department contributes to MBBS teaching by delivering scheduled lectures and academic sessions for 4th Year and Final Year MBBS students. Teaching includes topic-based lectures, case-based discussions and orientation to radiotherapy workflow and basic oncology principles.

Postgraduate (FCPS Radiation Oncology): 

The Department of Radiotherapy & Oncology is a CPSP-recognized training center for FCPS (Radiation Oncology). The department provides structured postgraduate training through supervised clinical practice, radiotherapy planning exposure (2D/3D planning), treatment delivery, ward/OPD activities and regular academic sessions including case discussions and Journal Club.

Monthly Journal Club

A departmental Journal Club is held on the first Saturday of every month to promote evidence‑based practice and improve clinical decision‑making.

RESEARCH

The department supports clinical research and audit work aimed at improving patient care. Our focus includes treatment outcomes, toxicity monitoring, and service improvement.

The Department of Radiotherapy & Oncology provides radiotherapy and chemotherapy services supported by essential planning and diagnostic facilities. We focus on safe treatment delivery, proper documentation and patient support at every step.

Clinical Services

Radiotherapy Facilities

  • LINAC (Linear Accelerator): Used for modern external beam radiotherapy with precise dose delivery.
  • Acuity System: Used for 2D treatment planning (where required), alongside CT‑based planning for 3D‑CRT.
  • Cobalt-60 Unit: Available for radiotherapy treatment as per clinical indication and departmental protocols.
  • 3D Conformal Radiotherapy (3D‑CRT): CT‑based simulation and TPS‑supported planning to improve treatment accuracy.

PROJECTS / DEPARTMENTAL EXTENSION / SPECIAL FEATURES

Oncology Block (Under Construction)

A new oncology facility is currently under construction and is planned as a five‑storey building with 100 beds. The aim is to provide chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and diagnostic services under a single roof, improving patient convenience and coordination of care.
Expected completion: June 2026.

PET Cyclotron Facility (In Progress)

A dedicated PET cyclotron facility is also being developed to strengthen advanced diagnostic and staging services.
Expected completion: April 2026.
